Whatever. I’m gay and I’m not one bit queer at all.

I hate the word queer and hate being labeled as queer. I’m gay, I am a BIOLOGICAL male with xy chromosomes and am only attracted to biological men, in my opinion and from personal experience the alphabet soup people are usually girls with rainbow hair and hoodies who date men but like to shame them for not being attracted to their bobs and vagine. Sorry, its not a “man hole,” its a vagina, I think the human body is a beautiful feat of evolution, but calling it something different doesn’t make me attracted to the opposite sex. And from what I’ve read lesbians have it even worse with all this “its a woman’s penis!” Nonsense

I agree. I also hate the word and being labeled as such.

Finally our community is opening up to the people it was created for, religious hierarchs.

The Catholic church has housed many gay people over the centuries but this was a weird circumstance where people's sexual orientation was viewed as a sin and people became self-hating due to their religious faith contradicting their instinctive sexuality. The religious argument has always been against the action of sex rather than attraction. Gay people could just not have sex "turn to God" and join the church as a way to hide their sexuality and to try to cope with their own idea that they were sinners. This also led to psychological instability and predatory behavior because they had no outlet for their sexual frustration.

None of those people are "ace" they were just using the church as a giant closet.

Yeah that's true, I think the original joke is just referring to the fact that this would probably fall under the "asexual" umbrella in TQ-world, lol. Which often describes people as "asexual" who really aren't...

The religious argument has always been against the action of sex rather than attraction.

That's not true, at least for the Catholic church. They try to spin it that way, but that's just for the PR. This is what the Catechism of the Catholic church says about homosexuality (perhaps easier site to read:

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

See bolded part. And again, in 2358:

The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.

The Catholic church does, in fact, claim that the attraction, even devoid of action, is "disordered," even if they acknowledge that "nothing can be done about it" and the like.

Oh yeah, I've always thought that if I'd been born in an earlier time, I would've become a nun to get out of marriage. And this is so often framed as a bad thing, but I don't think it is. Failing short of modernity, what method of accommodation do you propose? Does anyone really think it'd be better if there wasn't consecrated life there, as a way of opting out of straight marriage?

Well, tbf, I'd say that ONLY straight people are queer!

What is "queer", after all? A term that implies being same-sex-attracted, instead of just coming right out and saying so. Why? To maintain plausible deniability for... spicy straights. AKA gay-wannabes. Who feel entitled to membership in LGB. Except that, yanno, they aren't actually L, G, or B. Hence the necessity of a bullshit label that suggests they're kinda-sorta not 100% hetero... in some vague, permanently-undefined way. Thus always leaving them with the escape hatch of: "hey, I never actually said that I was gay!!!"

Those who are, in fact, same-sex-attracted have no need of this weasel word; we can just call ourselves gay/homosexual, lesbian, or bisexual. Because we're not trying to obfuscate. Or pass ourselves off as something other than what we are. Or barge in where we don't belong.

In the long run, I agree. I do think there is some risk for LGB people who feel insecure about themselves or their sexual orientation to hide behind this word. "Bisexual" is not trendy enough for many in the younger generation, "lesbian" is not trendy enough, and many are trying to redefine "gay" to mean anything under the sun, and not homosexuality, which is what it does mean.

I've also occasionally seen people use the word "queer" when what they really mean is questioning. I wish the use of "questioning" were more socially accepted than calling people a homophobic slur...

Oh, definitely; and even more so as "homosexual" and "bisexual" are increasingly deemed problematic in spicy straight/trans eyes (because they exclude those who aren't same-sex attracted by definition). Which makes LGB people even more vulnerable to this "queer" bullshit.

I wish the use of "questioning" were more socially accepted than calling people a homophobic slur...

You & me both :( In fact, as I've been discussing with a fellow bi person lately, this "Q"-- for "questioning"-- is the only other letter that we should add to LGB. It's valuable for those who aren't sure, particularly kids; they need an identity that they can try on, you know? Without having to commit before they feel ready. Just as long as this is understood to be a temporary label, that you only use until you know your sexual orientation and settle on the one which describes it. I think that if this "Q" were still available, we'd see a lot fewer gay and bi people tempted by the other, homophobic-slur one. So let's bring back "questioning"! A changing-room for trying on the idea of being same-sex attracted, and deciding whether or not it fits.

I agree!! I definitely think this should be normalized. (There have been a couple of "Questioning" memes over on s/LGBmemes posted recently and I was thinking it might be nice to have some more, there are so many relatable experiences about questioning that I could think to make memes about.) I am leery of adding Q just because I'm afraid society would then pressure us to accept a slur as part of the "community," haha. But I could grow used to LGBQ with Q as in questioning with some time to recover, I think. :)

Totally agree. I think that's a good potential issue to point out, the bounds with which it makes sense to use such a word. We certainly need to plan ahead as a community next time we introduce new vocabulary, or else we might end up with another shitshow of redefining and gaslighting like with this gender identity nonsense...
