I don't think she's backtracked. All her 'backtrack' says is that she supports trans people and her comments were misunderstood. Those are just facts. Her comments were misunderstood. I don't know if she realises that they were deliberately misunderstood because everything but complete and total capitulation and constant validation is considered literal murder. I just don't think she understood what she was getting herself into. She didn't realise that saying that transwomen weren't the same as biological women makes her a disgusting bigot.

It's the same with Middler. Her most recent tweets are filled with her genuine confusion that wanting to protect women means she is being accused of hating trans people. We are well aware of what is happening and knew that as soon as they spoke up they would be subject to extreme nastiness. They weren't. They just thought they were saying something sensible. They didn't realise that there is so much utter insanity in control of the conversation that punishes people for not being totally compliant.
