No, it is use of likeness. Can be illegal on it's own. Especially if not disclosed or reasonably assumed to not be the person cloned. Copywrite applies to what is said.

Could be used in fraud, but not necessarily.

Reply is likely incorrect, though it is a matter of current legal debate.

A derivative work is usually illegal. The question is whether it is legal imitation, illegal use of likeness or a derivative work.

It’s Time for The Linux Foundation to Stop Ignoring Desktop Linux by [deleted] in Linux

[–]ErinCarson 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Let us be real. If UNIX were to have a desktop it would be MAC OS or BSD. No serious Linux people even want a GUI, let alone full desktop functionality. Linux fan boys need to let it go.

I have been begging for years to have Linux be competitive. It is so bad that I went back to Windows servers. Linux isn't just painful to use, the devs deliberately retain bad "features." This isn't 1994. I shouldn't need complex terminal commands for what a double click can accomplish in other OSes.

P.S. Diet Pi is an example of Linux done right. I run it in Hyper-V for my Linux services. No X-Window/GUI has impressed me, but Q4OS is pretty good. Latest Lubuntu is pretty usable. I only run Debian based OSes though... Hate MAC Though it gets many things very right. Windows networking seems broken, but most of the OS isn't plainly stupid and obtuse. Also running programs requires that you click on them, not write a novel (plus some security stuff sometimes.

I'm honestly surprised they are not jumping for joy at the downing of Parlor. Gave it an "informative" vote though, thanks for the post. I'm sure some people are interested.

Also, Parlor had no contingency for this outcome, and it was the most predictable occurrence imaginable. Parlor builds on hostile infrastructure and fails to fix video playback, while attempting to require using a GPS enabled device in order to use the service. This was a low effort cash out buy someone. Not necessarily fraud or anything like that though.

Virtual private servers and parler. by solder0 in Internet

[–]ErinCarson 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Virtual Private Servers are a virtualization technology. It allows you to use a fraction of a server rather than the whole thing. To be fair, though Parlor probably scaled to many hundreds of servers, Amazon's middleware probably works like VPS for most such clients.

The issue is a lack of capable datacenters that are willing to do business with a company that is being targeted by the government, do to the RICO act. The actions against Mega Upload and Gibson Guitar send a clear message. The U.S. Government has no regard for the 5th Amendment anymore. You will be persecuted, regardless of prosecution.

Lastly, the service most resembling VPN is a "reverse proxy" also rarely called an "anonymizing front-end/load-balancer". Cloud Flair is probably the world's largest provider of this service. They will not accept liberal or conservative clients. You either support the neo-communist agenda, or stay quiet; lest you get purged.

Parlor was never a serious endeavor. It is a cash grab, and they just left with the money. They'll fight the easy battles for a bit and then "apologize", while walking away from that cushy job they made up for a year or two. If they are very clever, they may even walk with some cash in their pockets, but probably not much if any.

Parlor running on Amazon had a predictable outcome from the beginning. The Parlor people probably hoped that they weren't going to be that successful, that quickly. They had no strategy to survive the purge though, because they don't really care about coming back. It was pretty medium effort throughout.

Minds not complying with localities leaves Facebook exposed on one front. Facebook AI/automated moderation and it's ability to hire large staff would allow it to impose new barriers to entry for small firms.
