Over the years, many idealists have tried to establish utopian societies but none have been able to make them work.

Well ...

For example,
the United Sates of America,
the first modern Democracy, was,
until it proved successful,
considered Utopic.

Imagine the vision required to,
before the creation of the USA,
actually seek to set up a government
by the people for the people,
based neither on oppression
nor on lies (e.g. elaborate religious bullshit)
but, rather, on reason and consent, ...

... this in a world where
only monarchies/dictatorships, oligarchies,
and/or assorted priesthoods
had been ruling over people ...

... how Great was that!?

[–]HugodeCrevellier 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, the very people who invented Democracy
did wonder if it was any good.

Plato, famously, didn't like it.

Now, I'm not saying that the author is arguing for totalitarianism,
which would be rather unusual for a Libertarian! :D

I'm saying that if/as we descend into totalitarianism
(which does seem to be happening), we'll start noticing that
Democracy as a system starts getting attacked more and more,
from all sides, both the right and the left, wittingly and unwittingly,
with both good and bad arguments.

And this guy does make good arguments, for example:

A major paradox of government is that
if the demos has all the de jure power,
an oligarchy of financial interests has all the de facto power,
which is the unfortunate situation in which we find ourselves.

This is perfectly put.

But, that having been said, it is also interesting that,
as the author sought to frame the issues
from his Libertarian perspective,
somehow(!), an attack on Democracy
seemed promising.

Why do intellectuals oppose capitalism by jet199 in TheAntiWokeLeft

[–]HugodeCrevellier 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Intellectuals often think of themselves as secular priests/monks,
who eschew commercial concerns.

They may thus feel contempt for
both dogmatic materialist Capitalism

They imagine that they're here to do the work
of understanding what the human adventure is all about.

This is actually an essential societal function,
providing ethical direction, etc.

That's, of course, awful.

However, Cuba is sitting right next to and under embargo by a hostile military hyperpower, actually the most hostile, militarised and aggressive power in the world, which seems to be in the business of constantly (directly or by proxy) attacking some-or-other country. It is, and has been for a while, controlled by a permanent deep-state 'Neocon' regime, always looking for excuses for the next attack, bombing, invasion, regime-replacement, ... These Neocons would love to use 'just helping the poor Cuban protesters' to then install some Zelensky-type ('friendly to US interests') puppet-government in Cuba.

Under these circumstances, trying to widen through social media anti-government protests (even non-CIA-funded ones) may be argued to present a real national danger to an independent Cuba.

That's probably the calculus behind that terrible Cuban Law that restricts the use of information 'through telecommunication/ICT infrastructures, platforms or services, of content that threatens the constitutional, social, and economic precepts of the State.'

Let's just hope that this kind of law does not become a thing everywhere.

You seem to keep bringing this back to race.

That's ok too, I guess:

One can indeed, if sincere, discern differences between peoples.

Once you've been in Africa, that becomes clear, not just for sub-Saharan Africans in general, but also between the different tribes:

It is accurate to conclude that e.g. Pigmies are short and Dinkas are tall.

In Africa, you can also see Africans left to their own devices, and observe how they live, manage their affairs, and treat each other.

And in Africa, you can't blame white-on-black racism or anything like that, though some people still try nonetheless, but nobody believes it, not really.

In any case, Africa is educational ... as it may offer a preview for the future of Europe and its (American, etc.) former colonies.

Sure.

On the other hand, laws are created/invented according to mentality/ideology.

And so, depending on the society/time, something that's harmful or even potentially catastrophic can be legal,
e.g. money in politics, lobbying, copyright trolls, Monsanto, mass immigration, health insurance companies, spying on citizens, corporate-police states, greed-driven ecosystem destruction, unjust wars, etc.

And something that's not harmful or even beneficial can be illegal,
e.g. freedom of speech, some political views, sharing information hidden by corrupt governments, using medicine paywalled by sociopaths, having a gun, etc.

Governments try to, or, rather, should try to, figure out how to make the minimum amount of laws required for a good/civilised world ...

but mentality does matter.

the main 'good guy' of WWII, and,
incidentally, the worst mass murderer of the 20th century,
you know the one that did e.g. this:

The Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of nearly 22,000 Polish military officers and intelligentsia prisoners of war carried out by the Soviet Union, specifically the NKVD ("People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs", the Soviet secret police) in April and May 1940. Though the killings also occurred in the Kalinin and Kharkiv prisons and elsewhere, the massacre is named after the Katyn forest, where some of the mass graves were first discovered by German Nazi forces. The order to execute captive members of the Polish officer corps was secretly issued by the Soviet Politburo led by Joseph Stalin.

NATO has become a dangerous anachronism,
which should have been dismantled when the Warsaw Pact was disbanded.

Europe should of course remain allied with the USA,
a former European colony after all,
which still shares many values with European civilization.

However, Europe must extricate itself from the USA's 'leadership',
which usually involves pointlessly mass-murdering people by the tens of thousands.

European foreign policy must stop being directed
by the 'Neocons' and/or other corrupt/evil forces
currently in control of the USA.

There are laws about immigration.

These were broken.

So much harm has been done by those (morons/cowards/criminals?)
that (unwittingly?) colluded with Europe-hating forces
to bypass these laws and enable/encourage illegal immigration into Europe,
basically to try to turn Europe into yet another shithole.

Every one of them should be found and indicted.
They should at the very least be fired.
They're either too stupid or too corrupt to be left in charge of anything.

The current 'left' seems to be marketing-agency astroturf

These are excellent points.

An important aspect of the USA and French revolutions
is that mass-production allowed the people
to basically have the same weapons (guns) as governments
and there were far more people than government mercenaries (police/army, etc), so ...

Before that, the expense and widescale unavailability of armour and quality weaponry
meant that e.g. a team of ten armoured knights on horseback could decimate entire villages of villeins,
something that helped prop-up feudalism.

We do now seem to be moving back towards some neo-feudal (but high-tech) situation.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't say that revolutions, or resistance to tyranny, has zero to do with violence.

It does seem so, doesn't it?

Nonetheless, there must be some hesitancy even towards saidit.
This is partly due to a certain lack of transparency about who owns/controls it.
Let's not forget that privatizing digital town squares
was done to bypass actual freedom of speech.

Eventually, a non-privately/corporately owned platform,
a publicly-owned platform, really analogous to a town square,
has to eventually be created,
where, by law and to the extent allowed by law,
e.g. freedom of speech, is implemented.

Real conspiracies do exist, but quantum physics is not one.

Far from bullshit, quantum phenomena are an undeniable aspect of reality.
You can witness them yourself, with simple home experiments.
Furthermore, attempts by Physicists to explain quantum phenomena are unquestionably sincere.

Anyone that offers a new, better, simpler, more elegant explanation for these phenomena
than the best current attempts, leading to better predictions,
will undoubtedly be celebrated by the world of Physics.
In Physics, a statement can be challenged by anyone, and is always only temporary
until a more accurate theory emerges from the process of logic and experiment.
Now, compare this to the dogmata of any religion of your choice.

Do not interfere, as in Star Trek's Prime Directive.

Trying to solve their problems for them is a bad idea.
It ends up, ironically, making them blame you for their problems,
entitled, child-like, throwing tantrums. That's not a good solution.

The Prime Directive is what should probably have been done for the whole of Africa.

The promiscuity of Africans might be related to a high infant mortality in Africa.
Europeans figured that they'd be kind and bring them actual/scientific medicine
(to replace voodoo/magic, etc.), thus lowering infant mortality.
But this led to overpopulation, famines, etc.
Well-meaning Europeans may arguably have done more harm than exploitative ones.

Of course, left to their own devices, the Africans of the USA may soon revert
to the state they were found in, back in Africa,
some of them literally in the Stone Age, enslaving each other, etc.

Nonetheless, trying to force civilization on primitive peoples doesn't seem to work.

They need to be left alone to eventually become civilized on their own.

It'd be interesting, for clarity, to know what all the (both natural and anthropogenic) sources of atmospheric CO2 are, by percentage per year.

I'm not the one pretending to challenge his arguments,
nor, certainly, spewing labels and insults,
including, ironically, about what a moron he is.

'The rest of the information' that you linked,
i.e. about gases other than CO2,
methane (CH4), at 0.01%, constitutes even (and much) less than CO2,
and as for Nitrous Oxide and/or CFCs, their percentages are even tinier, as in minuscule,
i.e parts per billion of the atmosphere.
The most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere seems to be ... water vapour.

And the CO2 part of the NASA thing you quote and link says

'carbon dioxide (CO2) is released through natural processes (like volcanic eruptions) and through human activities'.

Fine, so, what Mr Jones claims is that
the anthropogenic (human activities) portion
of the (0.04%) CO2 part of the atmosphere
constitutes merely 3% of that 0.04%,
meaning that natural processes contribute 97% of it,
i.e. of the 0.04% part of the atmosphere that is CO2.

Now, many/most policies currently being proposed
aim at curbing anthropogenic carbon production,
at great costs to societies/taxpayers/people
and great profits to the corporations positioned to 'solve the problem',
all the while ignoring that 97% of CO2 production is not anthropogenic.

So, his concerns seem arguably valid, IF his numbers are correct.

Are they correct?

You lazily posted statements from and a link to some NASA vulgarization aimed at kids:

'Four Major Gases Contribute to the Greenhouse Effect, Number one: Carbon Dioxide.'

Have you, with this, addressed his argument, in any way?

The statements that you imagine you're somehow challenging thus
is his claims that Carbon Dioxide only constitutes 0.04 % of the Earth's atmosphere,
and that (of that 0.04 %), 3% is anthropogenic, etc.

That's what needs addressing.
